Breastfeeding Awareness Week Celebration: Expert Talk
The School of Nursing enthusiastically celebrated World Breastfeeding Awareness Week with an expert talk to promote awareness regarding the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of both mothers and infants. The program aimed to reinforce evidence-based knowledge among nursing students and encourage them to become advocates for breastfeeding promotion in their future professional practice.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and a warm welcome to the distinguished guest speaker, faculty members, and students. The keynote speaker, an experienced maternal and child health expert, delivered an informative and engaging session highlighting the theme of Breastfeeding Awareness Week and its significance in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
During the expert talk, the speaker emphasized that breastfeeding is the ideal source of nutrition for infants, providing all the essential nutrients required for healthy growth and development during the first six months of life. The session covered the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, the importance of early initiation within the first hour of birth, and the recommendation of continued breastfeeding along with complementary feeding up to two years of age or beyond. The speaker also discussed the protective effects of breastfeeding against infections, malnutrition, obesity, and chronic diseases in children, while highlighting its benefits for maternal health, including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers, postpartum hemorrhage, and improved emotional bonding between mother and child.
Special emphasis was placed on the role of nurses in educating expectant and new mothers, addressing common breastfeeding challenges, correcting myths and misconceptions, and providing continuous emotional and practical support to ensure successful breastfeeding practices. Interactive discussions, real-life case examples, and question-and-answer sessions enabled students to clarify their doubts and gain practical insights into lactation management and breastfeeding counseling.
Faculty members and students from various nursing programs actively participated in the program with great enthusiasm. The session significantly enhanced the participants' understanding of breastfeeding practices and strengthened their commitment to promoting maternal and child health in the community.
