Guest Lecture on Cyber Forensics: From Virus to Deepfake

The Department of Forensic Science at Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University is organizing a specialized Guest Lecture titled “Cyber Forensics: From Virus to Deepfake”, designed to enhance the technical knowledge and investigative capabilities of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Forensic Science students. In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, cybercrime has grown more complex, ranging from traditional malware attacks to sophisticated AI-generated manipulations such as deepfakes. For aspiring forensic professionals, understanding these threats is not just beneficial—it is essential. This guest lecture aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application by offering students exposure to the most recent tools, investigative techniques, and operational challenges faced in cyber forensic inquiries.

The session will be delivered by Dr. (Prof.) Vinny Sharma, a distinguished academician and renowned expert in the field of cyber forensics from Galgotias University. Dr. Sharma has an impressive record of training elite national security and law-enforcement agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the National Security Guard (NSG), and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Her vast experience in handling complex cases and guiding professional investigators adds significant value to this academic initiative.

Beyond her work in digital crime investigation, Dr. Sharma has made notable contributions to AI-integrated forensic research, reflecting a deep understanding of how emerging technologies are shaping modern crime patterns. Her multidisciplinary expertise spans cyber forensics, forensic document examination, criminal profiling, and digital evidence analysis. This broad knowledge base ensures that students gain a holistic perspective on contemporary investigative methods and the interconnected nature of different forensic domains.

Overall, this guest lecture represents an important opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of cyber threats and enhance their readiness for future challenges in the forensic science profession. Through direct interaction with a leading expert, participants will be able to develop sharper analytical skills, greater technological awareness, and a more comprehensive approach to digital evidence examination.

AIM of the Event:

  • To introduce students to the foundational and advanced concepts of Cyber Forensics.
  • To enhance students’ understanding of evolving cyber threats, from traditional computer viruses to modern challenges such as AI-generated deepfakes.
  • To provide hands-on insights through real-world case studies, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical forensic applications.
  • To develop awareness about the role of Artificial Intelligence in both cybercrime and forensic investigation, and how AI can be used as a tool as well as a threat.
  • To promote ethical cyber practices and responsible digital behaviour, equipping students with skills to identify, analyze, and mitigate cyber vulnerabilities.
