INTERNATIONAL EXPERT SPECIAL SESSION ON HOME BASED BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING (NEW GUIDELINES 2025) IN COLLABORATION WITH OMRON HEALTH CARE

Home-based blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) has become an essential tool in modern healthcare, empowering individuals to actively participate in managing their cardiovascular health. According to medical experts, regular monitoring at home provides a more accurate picture of a person’s blood pressure compared to occasional readings taken in clinical settings. This is particularly important because factors like stress or anxiety during doctor visits—often referred to as “white coat hypertension”—can temporarily elevate readings and give a misleading impression.

Experts emphasize that HBPM helps in early detection of hypertension, a condition often called the “silent killer” because it typically presents no obvious symptoms. By tracking blood pressure regularly, individuals can identify abnormal patterns early and seek timely medical advice. This proactive approach significantly reduces the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

For effective home monitoring, choosing a validated and reliable digital blood pressure monitor is crucial. Upper-arm cuff devices are generally recommended over wrist or finger monitors due to their higher accuracy. It is also important to use the correct cuff size, as an ill-fitting cuff can lead to incorrect readings. Experts advise taking measurements at the same time each day, preferably in the morning and evening, and avoiding caffeine, exercise, or smoking at least 30 minutes prior to measurement.

Proper technique plays a vital role in obtaining accurate results. Individuals should sit comfortably with their back supported, feet flat on the floor, and arm resting at heart level. Resting for five minutes before taking a reading is recommended. Taking two to three readings and recording the average can further improve accuracy.

Maintaining a log of blood pressure readings is another key recommendation. This record can be shared with healthcare providers to assess trends and make informed decisions about treatment. Many modern devices also offer digital tracking through mobile apps, making it easier to monitor changes over time.

However, experts caution that HBPM should not replace regular medical consultations. Instead, it should complement professional care. Any consistently high or unusually low readings should be discussed with a doctor.

In conclusion, home-based blood pressure monitoring is a simple yet powerful practice that enhances awareness, supports early diagnosis, and improves long-term health outcomes when used correctly and consistently.
