A classroom session was organized on the occasion of International Vulture Awareness Day 2025 to sensitize students about the ecological significance and conservation needs of vultures. The session began with a brief introduction highlighting that vultures are nature’s clean-up crew, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance by disposing of animal carcasses and preventing the spread of diseases. The resource person explained the alarming decline of vulture populations in India and worldwide, primarily due to habitat loss, poisoning, and the harmful veterinary drug diclofenac. Students were introduced to the nine vulture species found in India, including critically endangered ones like the White-rumped Vulture and the Indian Vulture. Through multimedia presentations and case studies, the importance of vultures in biodiversity conservation was effectively conveyed. The interactive session included discussions on conservation strategies such as establishing vulture safe zones, banning harmful drugs, and strengthening captive breeding programs. Students also shared their views on how awareness campaigns and community participation can make a difference. To encourage engagement, a short quiz on “Know Your Vultures” was conducted, and students participated enthusiastically. The session concluded with a pledge to spread awareness about vulture conservation and support sustainable practices. Overall, the classroom session was highly informative and impactful, fostering awareness among students about the urgent need to protect these endangered scavengers. It not only enhanced their ecological knowledge but also motivated them to become responsible advocates for wildlife conservation.
