The School of Law is organizing an academic lecture on the theme “Legal Aid and Access to Justice: Role of District Legal Services Authority” with the objective of sensitizing students about the constitutional and statutory framework of free legal aid in India. Access to justice is a fundamental component of the rule of law and is enshrined under Article 39A of the Constitution of India, which mandates the State to ensure equal justice and free legal aid to economically weaker sections of society.
The session will focus on the functioning and significance of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The DLSA plays a crucial role in providing free legal representation, conducting Lok Adalats, spreading legal awareness, and implementing victim compensation schemes.
The lecture will also highlight the coordination between DLSA, Taluk Legal Services Committees, panel advocates, and para-legal volunteers in ensuring justice reaches marginalized communities.Through this event, students will gain practical insights into legal aid mechanisms, the procedure for seeking free legal services, and the challenges faced in ensuring effective access to justice. The discussion will also explore contemporary issues such as legal literacy, prison legal aid clinics, women and child rights protection, and alternative dispute resolution through Lok Adalats. The event aims to bridge the gap between theoretical legal education and real-world legal service delivery, encouraging future legal professionals to actively contribute to the cause of social justice and equitable legal access.
