Theme - A Low Vision Awareness Program
The Enhancing Vision, Empowering Lives organized during the month of February was conducted with the primary objective of spreading awareness about visual impairment and highlighting the importance of low vision rehabilitation within the field of optometry. The initiative aimed to educate the public about various low vision conditions, including their causes, risk factors, early signs, and the importance of timely diagnosis. Special emphasis was placed on informing the community that low vision is not total blindness, and with appropriate care, individuals can effectively utilize their remaining vision to lead independent and productive lives.
The program featured interactive awareness sessions, comprehensive vision screening camps, and live demonstrations of different low vision aids such as handheld and stand magnifiers, telescopic devices, high-powered spectacles, and electronic assistive technologies. Optometry students and faculty members actively engaged with patients and caregivers, explaining adaptive strategies for reading, mobility, and performing daily activities. Counseling sessions provided guidance on environmental modifications, improved illumination, contrast enhancement, and visual training techniques to maximize functional vision.
The event underscored the essential role of optometrists in delivering specialized low vision care and strengthening community outreach services. It also offered valuable clinical exposure to students. Overall, the program significantly improved public awareness, promoted early intervention, and supported inclusive, patient-centered eye care practices.
