The School of Architecture, Planning and Design is organizing an online guest lecture on 2nd December 2025, centred on the expanding global discourse of universal design and accessibility. As built environments continue to evolve, the need for inclusive, people-oriented spaces has become more important than ever. This lecture aims to help students understand the significance of universal design in addressing diverse human needs and creating environments that support mobility, usability, and equal access for all individuals.
The session will be delivered by Dr. Nidhi Nautiyal, Principal Universal Design Specialist at Auckland Council, New Zealand. With a rich professional background that spans various international projects, Dr. Nautiyal has contributed extensively to the development of inclusive public spaces, accessible infrastructure, and urban planning initiatives driven by universal design principles. Her experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and government bodies makes her insights particularly valuable for students preparing to enter professional practice.
Through this lecture, students will be introduced to a wide range of global best practices, contemporary design approaches, and case studies that highlight how cities around the world are integrating accessibility into mainstream planning. The session will bridge the gap between academic learning and on-ground implementation, helping students appreciate the practical relevance of universal design in modern architecture and urban development.
This event serves as an inspiring platform for emerging architects, designers, and planners to rethink their design processes from an inclusive lens. By engaging with real-world examples and expert perspectives, students will gain a deeper understanding of their role in shaping environments that are equitable, functional, resilient, and future-ready.
