The School of Agriculture, Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University, is organizing a three-day Workshop on “Fungus Culture Techniques” from 17th to 19th November 2025, under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and the Ag-Venture Club. This workshop aims to enhance students’ understanding of fungi, their vital role in agriculture, and the modern laboratory techniques used for culturing and studying various fungal species. Designed as a blend of theory and practice, the event will provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience that connects microbiological concepts with their practical agricultural applications. Understanding the biology, ecology, and culture of fungi is therefore essential for managing plant health and improving agricultural productivity. This workshop will focus on developing the participants’ skills in identifying, isolating, and culturing fungi using standard laboratory methods.
Throughout the three-day program, participants will receive hands-on training in essential microbiological techniques, including aseptic handling, preparation of culture media, sterilization methods, inoculation, sub-culturing, and maintenance of pure fungal cultures. They will also learn how to prepare temporary and permanent slides to observe fungal structures under a microscope, identify common genera, and study their colony characteristics. The workshop will emphasize the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, safety protocols, and contamination control in laboratory work.
In addition to practical training, the workshop will include expert lectures by resource persons and faculty members specializing in mycology, plant pathology, and agricultural microbiology. These sessions will provide valuable insights into the diverse applications of fungal culture techniques. Topics such as the use of fungi in biological control of plant diseases, production of biofertilizers, enzyme synthesis, and industrial applications will be discussed in detail. The participants will also explore the role of beneficial fungi like Trichoderma, Aspergillus, and Rhizopus in improving crop health and promoting sustainable agriculture.
A key highlight of the event will be the discussion on innovative approaches to fungal research and its entrepreneurial potential. Participants will be encouraged to think creatively about using fungi-based technologies in agribusiness, such as the production of biopesticides, organic compost, and biofertilizers. By connecting scientific knowledge with practical and commercial opportunities, the workshop aims to nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among young agriculturists. This workshop will not only strengthen laboratory and analytical skills but also enhance scientific curiosity, problem-solving ability, and research aptitude. It will help students appreciate the significance of microorganisms in agriculture, food safety, and environmental sustainability.
AIM of the Event:
- To provide hands-on training in fundamental and advanced laboratory techniques for isolating, culturing, identifying, and preserving various fungal species.
- To enhance understanding of the role of fungi in agriculture, including their beneficial applications in biocontrol, soil fertility, and crop protection, as well as their role as plant pathogens.
- To develop laboratory skills and research aptitude among students by familiarizing them with aseptic techniques, culture media preparation, and microscopic observation of fungi.
- To promote scientific and entrepreneurial thinking by highlighting the potential use of fungi in agribusiness sectors such as biofertilizers, biopesticides, and organic farming inputs.
- To encourage sustainable agricultural practices through the study and application of beneficial fungi that improve soil health, enhance crop productivity, and reduce chemical dependency.
