World Soil Day

The School of Agriculture, Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University is celebrating World Soil Day with the aim of creating awareness about the fundamental role of soil in sustaining agriculture, food security, and ecological balance. Observed globally on 5th December, World Soil Day emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy soils for present and future generations. Soil is a living and dynamic natural resource that supports plant growth, regulates water, cycles nutrients, and sustains biodiversity. However, increasing pressure from intensive agriculture, deforestation, soil erosion, nutrient depletion, pollution, and climate change has led to widespread soil degradation, making the observance of this day highly relevant. Through this celebration, the School of Agriculture seeks to sensitize students, faculty, and the wider community to the need for sustainable soil management practices and responsible land use.

The event highlights the scientific and practical importance of soil health in enhancing crop productivity, improving water-use efficiency, and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. Special emphasis is placed on soil fertility management, soil-water relationships, organic matter conservation, balanced nutrient application, and soil conservation measures such as contour farming, mulching, crop rotation, and integrated nutrient management. Expert lectures and interactive sessions are organized to help participants understand how healthy soils contribute to climate resilience by improving carbon sequestration and reducing the vulnerability of crops to droughts and floods. These discussions also underline the role of soil testing and soil health cards in promoting precision farming and minimizing environmental degradation. The celebration also serves as a platform to engage with local farmers and farming communities by spreading awareness about the long-term benefits of soil conservation, organic amendments, reduced chemical dependency, and sustainable cropping systems. By promoting a holistic understanding of soil as the foundation of agricultural productivity and environmental health, World Soil Day at Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand University reinforces the institution’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and rural development. Overall, the event inspires students and stakeholders to recognize soil as a precious and non-renewable resource and to work collectively towards its protection, restoration, and sustainable management for ensuring food security and ecological sustainability.

AIM of the Event:

  • To create awareness about the importance of soil as a vital natural resource for agriculture, food security, and environmental sustainability.
  • To educate students and stakeholders about soil health, soil fertility, and sustainable soil management practices for long-term agricultural productivity.
  • To promote scientific approaches such as soil testing, balanced nutrient management, and soil conservation techniques to prevent soil degradation.
  • To sensitize students and farming communities to the impacts of soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and climate change on soil quality and crop production.
  • To encourage the adoption of eco-friendly practices including organic matter management, composting, and integrated nutrient management for improving soil health.
